MVIS AND BARTCO UK HELP LOCAL SCHOOL PREPARE STUDENTS FOR WORLD OF WORK
Two Derbyshire firms are investing in the future of local students, helping Highfields School in Matlock to further develop its careers strategy and supporting pupils as they explore their career options and prepare for the world of work.
Anne Ashman, general manager of intelligent transport system (ITS) companies, Mobile Visual Information Systems (MVIS) and Bartco UK, has become an enterprise advisor to Highfields.
In this role, she is helping Highfields to build a careers strategy that gives students multiple opportunities to learn about work, meeting the “Gatsby Benchmark” standard highlighted in the government’s new careers strategy, launched in December.
Anne is using her experience as a senior business woman to advise Highfields on the skills required in business, including those in the highways sector. The school is benefitting from access to her extensive industry network and the work experience opportunities that this allows.
Highfields students will also continue to benefit from MVIS’ and Bartco UK’s work placement programme, as well as individual projects such as last summer’s MVIS Challenge, where 12 and 13 year olds were invited to consider the wider role that the firms’ signs could perform.
Said Anne: “MVIS and Bartco UK are committed to supporting local youngsters as they prepare for the world of work, and as such, I am delighted to be able to strengthen the firms’ involvement in the development of Highfields’ careers strategy by becoming an enterprise advisor.
“The highways sector in which the companies operate faces a shortage of recruits – especially those embarking on technical careers – and so of course I am always hopeful that as a result of our work with the school, some students will consider it as a potential career route.
“Cain Gregory, our technical apprentice, joined us following a successful placement while at Highfields, and our apprenticeship scheme is proving a great career springboard: our assistant operations manager, Dom Bridge – another former Highfields student – was recently promoted to the role, having joined us as an apprentice four years ago.”
Added Highfields School’s life and work skills co-ordinator, Jane Turner: “The school is committed to meeting the requirements of the government’s new careers strategy, and I am absolutely certain that Anne’s advisorship will help us to do so.”
