Mike, our Developer shares his advice for working from home

April 2020Callie

As many of us are adjusting to working from home for the first time, we find ourselves getting to grips with new ways of communicating, working alongside new – sometimes furry – colleagues or mindlessly raiding the cupboard for snacks to keep us going. We thought we’d share how the FIG team are getting on to offer some WFH tips, and to show you that you’re not alone in this. If nothing else, it might give you some new snack inspiration…and who couldn’t use that right now?

  • Learn how to mute or use push-to-talk. If you’re conferencing from home or in an online class, remember that people can hear you and the people around you. If you need to take a phone call and somebody you live with comes in for a conversation, mute yourself or at the very least let them know they’re on microphone.
  • Keep your routines. Just because you’re at home doesn’t mean you should change how you go about your day. Shower, eat, clean your teeth and dress appropriately. Wearing your comfiest trousers might sound like a good idea, but sometimes it’s just nicer to change into them when work is finished.
  • Stay social. You don’t have to only use your online conferencing system to have important meetings, have an open channel that team members can join/leave as they want throughout the day. You can still have the office chatter while working remotely.

Music: I can listen to 20 genres a day or the same album on repeat, it doesn’t matter just give me tunes.
Internet: Knowledge and entertainment bundled into one. Need a map? Or a video on how to make a working microwave out of nothing but plastic bottles and hot glue? Internet.
Keyboard: A good keyboard, if you’ve got some old piece of junk that you barely use at home, it’s worth it to nab your work keyboard or get one you can type fluently on.
Earphones:I’d prefer headphones, but my name isn’t Mikh… Something to blast your music with, but also drown out the rest of the world when you need to.
